Mylar versus Dacron Mainsails

Does anyone in the fleet have any real data on the subject of mylar versus dacron for mainsails?? I've spent some time on google looking for sound material, but strangely cannot find any......

  1. I would suggest talking to the fireball class and ask what they think of Mylar Mains as they have already undergone the change. I'm sure they have views on whether it was a good idea or not. As I understand it, Mylar holds is shape much better right up until the laminates go and then you've had it. Dacron stretches over time and is therefore a lot more forgiving. So Mylar needs a bit more care as once damaged, it's a new sail if you want that performance back. I would say for National events and those that buy new sails every year, I can see why this is being suggested. I do however worry for the club sailors which make up a larger part of fifteen owners. Cost would also have to be considered.
As I say, try getting some info from classes that have already been through this. Hope that helps.
